Many Afro-Colombian gold miners in Colombia are women who have been mining since they were in their mothers’ wombs. Bielska BWA Gallery, Bielsko-Biała, Poland As part of the Beyond Time Artist-in-Residency program for Galerie Bielsko BWA, an outdoor site-specific community installation was created for the city of Bielsko-Biała, Poland. The rose sits on top of a Nazi bunker in front of City Hall. A remnant of Poland’s history in WWII. One symbol covers another symbol. The Biała River and the shield of Biała are the catalysts for the large installation work. At the center of the rose is an eye. It is the eye of nature watching us. Poland is now going through many negative changes very quickly in its attitude toward the preservation of their remarkable nature. More than 18 individuals, children, teenagers, and adults participated in the making of The Rose. Family separation is a cruel and inhumane policy whose system is overwhelmed. The work utilizes a 100 year old cradle, which is labored with embroidery, sequin, vintage glass pieces and glass beads indicating the place for someone royal. The inside of the cradle is full of growing vines ready to take back this being into the earth. The vintage green glass pieces symbolizing precious minerals, highlighting the original subordination of Latin America and the Caribbean to the status of an unofficial colony of the USA and European entities. The legalization of the precious materials removed from these lands while making illegal the people coming from these regions. Cortés’s recent mixed media sculptures and installations explore the theme of injustice that is at the root of the predatory gem and mineral excavation industry. The mining of precious stones has been an influential factor in the continued colonization of Colombia, having helped to fund the more than 60-year conflict there. Violence stemming from the mineral mining industries have also affected Brazil, as well as several African nations. Canté Jondo makes visible the human cost that is provoked by these mineral extractions, raising critical questions about the politics of erasure and exclusion in the aftermath of colonialism.
